Nintendo packs NFC tech into Wii U

Near-field communication is starting to find its way into more and more devices - and now Nintendo's adding it to the Wii U console, due out this year.

Nintendo revealed the news in a financial presentation, along with plans to use the tech to "create cards and figurines that can electronically read and write data via noncontact NFC and to expand the new play format in the video game world." No doubt NFC-equipped Poké Balls will be among the first things to arrive that take advantage of the Wii U's new ability.

Nintendo also, rather more prosaically, intends to use the Wii U's NFC functionality to enable users to make micropayments. Expect to see NFC-enabled gift vouchers for purchasing things on the new Nintendo Network, then.
