New Apple iMacs arrive

03 May 2011

As we speculated last week, today Apple has decked out its window display with some shiny new iMacs. With prices starting just under a grand (£999), the new desktop all-in-ones are claiming a 70 per cent speed hike and three times faster graphics. That’s down to Intel’s quad-core Sandy Bridge i5 (or i7, by special order) silicon and new AMD Radeon graphics. The new range also has Intel’s 10Gbps Thunderbolt connectivity – the superfast interface that’s tipped to take over from USB.

We’ll let Apple talk you through prices:

The new iMac is available through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorised Resellers. The 21.5-inch iMac is available in two configurations: one with a 2.5 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6750M and 500GB hard drive for a suggested retail price of £999.00 inc VAT (£832.50 ex VAT); and one with a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6770M and 1TB hard drive for a suggested retail price of £1249.00 inc VAT (£1040.83 ex VAT). The new 27-inch iMac is available in two models: one with a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6770M and 1TB hard drive for a suggested retail price of £1399.00 inc VAT (£1165.83 ex VAT); and one with a 3.1 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, AMD Radeon HD 6970M and 1TB hard drive for a suggested retail price of £1649.00 inc VAT (£1374.17 ex VAT).

Mac users - please help a potential convert: which of these shiny new iMacs would do a decent job of photo editing (serious amateur) and basic HD video editing? Would they all cope well? For that and general use (web, work, music etc) would an upgrade to 8Gb of ram make any difference?
PCs are always great when they come out of the box and rubbish 6 months later. Are Macs any better?
    Many thanks!

    Matt,

Simple answer...any of them will be fine. I am still using a 4 year old iMac and have over 50,000 photos and hundreds of hours of video that i can edit in iMovie.

Make the move...you will never look back!

    Good Luck

    Ben

    Matt,

any of these beauties would be more than adequate, and will give you many years excellent service. I have been using Macs since 1990 and all have lasted at least four years as my main Mac, and only been replaced due to tech-lust not through knackeredness :)

Everyone I know who has switched to a Mac (about ten of my friends) has been thrilled and none have regretted it for a second.

    Enjoy ...
