Nokia 8800 reborn in gold, black and Aston Martin guises

Call us easily pleased, but we thought the sliding, stainless steel Nokia 8800 was already one of the sexiest fashion phones in the kingdom – that’s why we voted it on to our 2005 Cool List. Gadget tweakers clearly think otherwise though, which is why this week has seen a trio of new luxury 8800s arrive.

First up is the gold one above, which – by all rights – should be as tacky as a necklace from Argos, but recently made our ‘Gadget of the Day’. Luckily, we’ve been having a play with it, drawing awed whispers whenever we ‘accidentally’ put it on the table in meetings: it’s a genuinely expensive-looking and –feeling piece of kit. The company behind it is an expert in lathering products with a gold finish and is selling it for ‘around’ £800 – price is on application – from Gold Plating.

Next on the custom circuit is the majestic Aston Martin 8800 pictured below. In this case you’re buying the name more than any huge cosmetic flourishes: it comes with a laser-etched Aston logo on the phone and charging dock, and comes preloaded with Aston wallpapers and a ringtone that emulates the gunning of a Vantage engine. It’ll set you back £940 from

Aston Martin.

There’s also the black Russian 8800 floating around, but at the time of writing we couldn’t find any reputable UK shops selling it. Previously it had been on sale at eBay and here for £850 but the thing’s now harder to find than Harrison Ford on the run. Let us know if you spot it.
