Mirror’s Edge Catalyst delayed until May 2016 – you’re welcome, acrophobes

EA's free-running revival needs a little more time in the oven

Seven years after its release, Mirror’s Edge remains an incredibly distinctive experience: no game since has nailed that dazzling look or incredible sense of movement as you bound across skyscraper rooftops.

We waited and waited for another entry, and now it seems we’ll wait a bit longer now. Electronic Arts and developer DICE revealed today that Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, the prequel-esque rebooted take on the franchise, won’t make its February release target on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Instead, we’ll be able to step back into Faith’s bright red shoes on 24 May.

As with most delays, the reason given is a need for more time to polish what appears to be an pretty significant undertaking. “Years ago, we set out an ambitious vision for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst,” writes senior producer Sara Jansson. “Achieving that vision and delivering the best possible experience is equally inspiring and challenging. And it takes time.”

"We will use these few extra months to make sure that when you step into the massive City of Glass and experience the rise of Faith, it’s as entertaining, impressive, and memorable as it can be," she adds.

As ever, while delays are disappointing, it’s always better to get things right the first time rather than ship a mess and spend months cleaning it up. Besides, DICE is busy finishing up Star Wars Battlefront, and if the recent beta is any indication, we’ll pull plenty of enjoyment from that large-scale affair to last us through the spring. And there’s a wealth of other games due early next year, as well.
