Slimmer Apple TV with Siri and touchpad remote now expected in September

Latest report claims the long, long-rumoured set-top box will finally get its refresh this autumn

We were all set to welcome a new Apple TV into the world at Apple’s WWDC conference in June, following months of intensifying reports – but then at the last minute, it was supposedly pushed back.

So should we get caught up in the hype again now? Maybe. BuzzFeed News – which reported many of those details earlier this year – now claims that Apple plans to introduce the updated set-top box at an event in September. It’s likely to be the same event that brings us the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.

As noted before, the new Apple TV is expected to feature its very own version of the App Store, with apps and games designed for your TV. Enabling that should be a new Apple remote that features a touchpad, we’ve heard. And Siri will reportedly be included, as well, letting you use voice commands – and have the Apple TV work as the epicenter of your connected home.

According to this new report, the box will run on Apple’s A8 system-on-a-chip – the same seen in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus – and feature a new, slimmer look. BuzzFeed says it will also include more onboard storage for media.

What about Apple’s also long-rumoured streaming television service? BuzzFeed’s sources say it won’t be a part of the September reveal, and that it could come later in 2015, "but more likely next year." That might be disappointing to cord cutters looking for cable or satellite substitute, but getting a new Apple TV box out will be the first step in the process.
