HTC One M10 could release in May with same back camera as the Nexus 6P

Latest rumour suggests a familiar back camera sensor

We already have a strong idea of what to expect from the Samsung Galaxy S7 and some hints on the LG G5, both debuting on 21 February at MWC. But now leakers are turning their attention towards the HTC One M10, which should follow a little later.

Just yesterday, a rumour suggested that the HTC One M10 – also known by its codename of “Perfume” – may launch at an event on 11 April. And today, leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks), who shared a purported leaked photo of the phone last week, added that the phone will then release in the United States during the week of 9 May.

There’s no word yet on when other territories might see the release, but the general window suggests that HTC isn’t willing to go head-to-head with both Samsung and LG this time around. Last year, HTC came up a little short with its HTC One M9, which didn’t make significant strides over the earlier model, but now the company has some extra time to distance itself from the competition.

And we have another interesting tidbit today, as well. According to leaker LlabTooFer, who 9to5Google says has a reputation for solid HTC leaks, the company may use Sony’s IMX377 12-megapixel 1.55um sensor for its back camera on the device. It would also have laser autofocus and optical image stabilisation as part of its camera package.

Does the sensor sound familiar, by chance? It’s the same one seen in both the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X, and we had mostly positive things to say about both. Although the megapixel count is lower than in some competitors, the larger camera sensor pixels help make for strong photos. And it’s the same premise as HTC’s older UltraPixel cameras, which weren’t quite as impressive back when.

All told, the HTC One M10 sounds like a big leap ahead of last year’s phone, but also a significant shift away from what worked well before – as seen with the iPhone-like (and/or HTC One A9-like) look in the leaked photo. Above, you’ll see the leaked M10 photo on the left and the very similar One A9 on the right.

Despite the supposed visual changes and lack of Boomsound speakers, the promise of a 5.1in Quad HD screen, Snapdragon 820 chip, 4GB RAM, and Android 6.0 gives us plenty reason to be intrigued. We’ll share more as we hear it.
