XBox 720 and PS4

While it's a dead cert that Sony and Microsoft are beavering away on the next generation of consoles, today we got a morsel of information that all-but-confirms the existence of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720.

During a keynote speech at Gamescom, EA Labels President Frank Gibeau stated that he's seen the next-gen consoles in the flesh.

While not elaborating further, he referred to the consoles by simply saying, "I've seen both of them." A recently-leaked Microsoft internal document points to the release of an Xbox 720 in 2013, kitted out with Kinect 2 and augmented reality features, while reports suggest that the PS4 may embrace the cloud gaming revolution.

Gibeau went on to discuss the expanding and changing games market, and confirmed EA's dedication to 'Free-to-play' gaming. "Free-to-play will become the dominant pricing model by the end of the decade," he said.

How will free-to-play figure into the next generation of consoles – particularly given Sony's purchase of cloud gaming service Gaikai? We'll have to wait to find out. Consider our interest piqued.

this is awesome news. but this cloud gaming, worries me if thats how things will go. not many people will be taking up on the idea. unless they all have superfast broadband. as this just wont work properly on standard speeds we have now. minimum of 50meg, to stream or play game with no lag.

so that means a new broadband infrastructure will need rolling out all over the uk. and that just wont happen. personally it will be the rich down south with virgin broadband. that can play these consoles. it will never see light of day in north wales.

    Hi Markster,
The Welsh Assembly have recently announce the continuation of their Broadband Support Scheme in Wales. If your current broadband speed is less than 2Mbps you qualify to have an alternative service such as satellite broadband. Under the WAG Broadband Support Scheme you can claim up to £1000.00 towards the set up costs of an alternative broadband solution.

I have Virgin fibre optic cable in South Wales but don't know when it is coming to an area near you. My broadband is reaching 50Meg and there are plans for 100 Meg in the near future. Unfortunately at the moment it comes with a price tag :(

the PS3 and Xbox have been around for 10yrs+ so this tech has got to look to the future ... super fast BB will be the norm within 3 - 5 yrs. (Just got it in my village and it really does improve tech options ...)
