£100 EE Kestrel is the cheapest 4G smartphone around

EE has announced its first own-branded smartphone, the Kestrel, in a bid to attract those looking for 4G speeds on a budget.

The Kestrel is based on the Huawei Ascend G6, and at £100, it’s the cheapest 4G smartphone currently available in the UK.

The Kestrel retains most of the G6’s features, from its 4.5in qHD (960 x 540) screen, to its 1.2Hz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. 

8GB of expandable storage, Android Jelly Bean 4.3 and a 2000mAh battery make up the rest of the spec sheet. The only difference is a bump down in the camera department from 8MP to 5MP.

The Moto G offers more smartphone for similar money, with better specs all round, but it doesn’t offer 4G support or a microSD slot.

The Kestrel can also be picked up for free, on a £14 per month two year contract which offers 500 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB of data.

£22 per month bumps the minutes up to 1000, retains the unlimited texts and serves up 2GB of data in addition to unlimited texts and calls from any EU country.

There’s no word on a solid release date for the EE Kestrel as of yet, but you will be able to pick it up by the end of April.
