Arcam is readying itself for an assault on the B&W Zeppelin, and its iPod-docking weapon of choice is the rCube.

As the name implies, it’s a cool cube shape and will be available in black or white with a lovely silvery-grey grille. The controls on the top are touch-sensitive, plus you get a small remote thrown in.

A flap on top pops back to reveal an iPod dock, and also enables you to pick the rCube up – yes, it’s portable, with 4 hours of juice from the internal rechargeable battery.

But this isn’t just a portable iPod speaker dock. With help from a KLEER dongle plugged into your computer, you can wirelessly stream music to it. We had a quick play with the streaming, controlled via an iPhone, and it appeared to be a slick and simple process.

Sound quality seemed very impressive, and it went truly loud for such a small box, even in the rather large room we were in.

Apparently the clever audio technology that makes the rCube sound so big was developed because the designer couldn’t find an iPod speaker dock with enough volume to play back tapdancing. Each to their own. Seems to work, though.

The rCube will be on sale in August for £500, but look out for a full review before launch.
