Rumour: Apple iTV being tested – and it’s BIG

Testing for the Apple iTV is currently underway – and the screen size is likely to be large, if an anonymous source within the supplier is correct.

Focus Taiwan reports that initial testing of Apple’s HDTV set has started at Taiwanese manufacturer Hon Hai, and the source claims that screens between 46 and 55 inches are the likely candidates for any final model. That’s a lot larger than many might have predicted.

The source for the LCDs is likely to be a Japanese or Taiwanese manufacturer, according to the source, who also suggested that the launch of any Apple iTV might be a long way off – perhaps not even happening before the end of next year.

While Apple has never officially confirmed that it is working on a television set, CEO Tim Cook recently told NBC that TV was “an area of intense interest”, the biggest hint yet that something is on the cards.

My money is on there being a key feature that all TVs have missing, or strangers will be able to change the channel from outside your house. But not to worry, Apple will say it's still "Beta" and "it'll be fixed in the next one".

^^^ They'll say you're watching it wrong if there appears to be a glitch. 45-55 inches, magical, telovutionary, this changes everything....and the channel...again.

I can't afford to replace my TV every 6 months because apple says it's out of date - it's a NO from me

I just hope the rumours that Apple will attempt to secure the rights to certain events, e.g. the Premier League, so they can only be watched on an Apple TV aren't true.

But... with Apple I wouldn't be surprised.

How is Apple securing the Premiere League so that you have to watch it on their hardware any different or worse than Sky doing exactly the same thing with football, boxing matches, Formula 1 etc?

oh no, I already have a 46in tv, it can connect to the internet, and I can even watch tv shows on it too.

but now it looks like Apple are actually going to invent it (and presumably patent it) surely they'll be planning to sue me now and stop me watching TV until I buy the Apple TV.

Not understanding all the cynical negativity here. If Apple hadn't changed the game with the iPod, iPhone, iPad and iMac designs, you'd still be using cheap lumps of plastic with all the design flair of an East German car. Let's wait and see what they do with TV's before condemning them.

Of course, there's always the chance that the automatic condemnation is simple jealousy because they make stuff you can't afford.

Bought it, bored of it, got tired of Apple ripping me off, moved on.

Rather than get personal, make a technical observation. Like this looks like every other TV anyone has seen. Perhaps Samsung will sue Apple for breaching their patent on "a magical rectangle that shows moving pictures and sound transmitted using radio frequencies"?
