Make your profile sing If you load your profile with pertinent keywords and interests (and a dash of humour) you’ve got more chance of being recommended to new users and are more searchable by existing users.

Retweet Essentially, take a post from someone and broadcast it to all your followers. The more you rebroadcast them, the more likely your name is to get around and be Retweeted back. Make sure you use proper Tweetiquette by adding RT@username:

Use @username If you’re holding a conversation with someone, be sure to add @username to denote this –then all their followers will see your name too.

Use hashtags Essentially, you can tag your tweets with metadata, just by prefixing # at the beginning of any important word. Just choose to follow @hashtags on Twitter, and they will follow and automatically track your important words for other hashtags users.

Pimp your content Upload urls, images, music and video to sex up your Tweets. Try Twitterific for the iPhone or Twitpic for easy image upload from PC or phones. Twiddeo will let you do the same with video, while Tweetcube will let you send files, including MP3s.

Keep up-to-date with trends Use one of the many Twitter tracking tools to keep abreast with rising trends. Twitter search (formerly summize.com) will let you know what’s making people Tweet, while Tweetmeme will track the most popular threads of discussion in real time.

Aggregate and monitor Got a blog or website with RSS feeds? Use Twitterfeed to pipe the content automatically to your Twitter profile.

Also, Twittergrader with let you know how your feed ranks in the Twitterverse, while tools such as Tweetbeep will send you a mail every time there’s a mention of you.
