Non-SLR cameras are losing the battle against camphones for pocket space. We sense that this knowledge is behind Sony's decision to create a pocket-friendly snapper that’s thinner than a AA battery, but has managed to cram in more features than an out-of-town multiplex cinema. There's 5x optical zoom, though Sony claims to the 5x digital zoom can be used with no loss of resolution thanks to "Pixel Super Resolution". We raise a doubting eyebrow at the notion of lossless digital zoom, but with a 16.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor, we're pretty sure the TX55 will deliver some pretty sharp results.
There's Full HD movie recording with optical image stabilisation (and you can shoot 12MP stills while you're at it). Plus there's a whopping 3.3in touchscreen OLED to review your efforts. As we've come to expect from new Sony snappers, you'll also get sweep panorama mode, 3D panoramic shooting and 3D stills. A 3DTV Bravia sadly isn't included in the asking price. We're chasing that down now, but expect to see the TX55 arrive in September.
