GoPro Mission 1 8K cameras promise videography skills, with Hero-like durability
GoPro has announced the Mission 1 Series cameras, designed for pro videographers who still need the compact design and durability of a Hero.
GoPro has announced its Mission 1 Series cameras, the first which venture outside of its traditional action cam remit. With the 8K-capable Mission 1, GoPro is turning its attention to videographers and content creators. The Mission 1 retains a compact design and offers the same durability of a GoPro Hero, for example, but will be capable of producing more cinematic footage.
The flagship Mission 1 Pro offers a 50-megapixel sensor (one-inch) and that’s the largest ever for a GoPro device. That sensor can manage 50MP stills photos with burst capture at 60 images per second.
However, for video, it can film 4:3 Open Gate video at the top resolution at 30 frames per second, while managing 4K/120fps. If you switch the aspect-ratio to 16:9 you’ll get 8K/60fps, 4K/240fps and 1080p HD ad an incredible 960fps. That’s 32x slow motion video. You’ll also get a fixed lens with a 159-degree field of view.
GoPro reckons you’ll get three hours of battery life from the 4K/30fps video capture setting, but that can be pushed up to five hours if you’re ok with the 1080p Endurance Mode. Waterproofing allows you to pursue depths of 20 metres minus a case, while the OLED display is 14% larger than on any of the previous cameras from GoPro.
The company is also offering GoPro Mission 1 Pro ILS, which is a premium mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. It doesn’t have the same waterproofing elements, likely due to that lens mount.
The standard Mission 1, on the other hand, is a more affordable option with 4K/120fps Open Gate 4:3 video recording, and 8K/30fps, 4K/120fps, and 1080p/240fps when filming in 16:9. It retains the 20-feet of water resistance.
There’s no news on pricing yet, but pre-orders begin on May 21 and they’ll be available to buy the following week.
