Altec Lansing Octiv 650 blasts out

Ever thought a sound dock would come with apps? Prepare to be pleasantly surprised

That mantelpiece looking a little bare in your oh-so-quiet lounge? How about a shiny new 2.1 speaker dock for your iPhone or iPod?

The Altec Lansing Octiv 650 crams into its compact form a mighty 4-inch down-firing subwoofer and two 3-inch speakers for impressively loud sound from such a small box. But that’s not all that impresses. Altec Lansing is also offering apps free to download from the App Store that let you turn your iPhone into a full graphic equalizer.

Don’t want to get too technical? You can use the Music Mood app to display a roaring fire, complete with flaming sounds. Just add shag-pile rug and a bottle of bubbly. And, preferably a partner – it’s not quite as romantic alone.

The Octiv 650 will be available from April 25 in Black at £170, with a slate-grey model due early in the summer.
