Fossil’s first Android Wear watch, the Q Founder, is now available

It's strongly Moto 360-like in appearance, complete with the "flat tire" look

Fossil has been a leader in the traditional watch space for three decades, but smartwatches are starting to take some of the shine away from classic timepieces. So like Tag Heuer, Fossil has decided to embrace Android Wear.

And its first offering, the Q Founder smartwatch, is now available to purchase. As we discovered last month, the Fossil Q Founder is remarkably similar to the Motorola Moto 360 in design, with a circular watch face, leather and stainless steel band options, and most notably the blacked-out bottom portion of the screen that gives the look of a flat tire.

At least it has a slick, customisable Fossil watch face option to complement the usual Android Wear rotation. Like the Tag Heuer Connected, it runs on an Intel processor, although the promised 24-hour life on the 400mAh battery is very much in line with most Android Wear options.

The Fossil Q Founder is a lot more affordable than Tag Heuer’s £1,100 option, however: it sells for US$295 (about £195) with the stainless steel band. The brown leather strap option is not yet available. And it’ll work with your iPhone in addition to Android 4.4+ handsets, so it’s another option to consider if you have an Apple phone in your pocket.

We really liked the original Moto 360, but the recent second-gen entry proved a little disappointing with its lack of significant enhancements. Can a similar-looking device with the same OS really stand above, given all that? We look forward to taking it for a spin on our wrists soon.
