If you like the looks of the GT50 then ‘understated’ is the word you’ll want to bandy about. ‘Ho-hum’ could apply just as easily though – the Panasonic’s conservative design just really leap off the shelf. Then again, it’s a telly, so it’d be odd if it did.

In a word: superb. The plasma screen looks the business given any source – TV, games, 2D or 3D, Blu-ray – and deep blacks, bright, clean whites, vivid colours, stacks of detail and mastery of motion make it a class act.

Pana’s Viera Connect is much improved, and a dual-core chip serves up everything you could want in a smart TV (iPlayer, TwitterFace, Skype etc), though the Sony is better integrated. Menus are customisable, navigation is easy and quality is great.
Panasonic TX-P50GT50 review – verdict
The GT50’s larger 50in panel may help seal the deal in its favour if you’re looking at similarly priced rivals. You may find better online features and styling elsewhere but if you just want a fantastic picture, it’s a worthy contender.
