Sony buys Ericsson for US$1.45 billion
Following rumours of a buy out earlier this month, Sony has now officially bought out Ericsson’s mobile phone venture for a cool US$1.45 billion. The buy out gives Sony access to Ericsson's handset patents – and gives Sony an opportunity to more closely integrate its phones with its tablets, games and electronics devices.
Sony CEO Howard Stringer stated that the deal will enable Sony to offer consumers “… smartphones, laptops, tablets and televisions that seamlessly connect with one another and open up new worlds of online entertainment”.
The deal should give the Japanese tech giant much greater control over their device ecosystem, offering an Apple-like consistency and control between their tablets, mobile devices, televisions and games consoles.
Trusted Reviews has tweeted that Stringer has confirmed a brand change is also in the works and that it’s unlikely to just be ‘Sony’. We’ll find out for sure later today when Sony’s press conference is wrapped up.
