The 20 best Xbox One games to play today

Got an Xbox One? These are the 20 games you have to play

Fallout 4

The PlayStation 4 might've had the stronger initial start, but the Xbox One has slowly but surely roared back and proved itself a great current-gen console. And what makes a console great? Games, of course.

True, the Xbox One maintains the legacy of its predecessor by being a great destination for shooters, but that's not all: we've got great racing, awesome action affairs, charming platform experiences, and more in the bunch. (And yes, shooters. No need to worry.)

Whether exclusive or just simply awesome on Xbox, here are our current picks for the 20 games you must play on Xbox One. Clear some hard drive space (or grab an external one) and enjoy.

The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

We enjoyed 2014's Dragon Age: Inquisition, but it's The Witcher III: Wild Hunt that easily takes the crown for the most stunning and enthralling fantasy adventure today. It's a vast and memorable quest across a compelling land, filled with interesting characters, quests, and combat.

Even the add-on content is brilliant. Wild Hunt requires a big commitment, for sure, but this fantastic role-player can easily eat up all your time if you let it.

Forza Motorsport 6

No, it's not a mistake: we've got two Forza games on this list, and they're totally different. Where Forza Horizon 2 evolves the open-world, arcadey premise with spectacular results, Forza Motorsport 6 takes the sim-leaning main series to new heights.

It's absolutely stunning (and at a solid 60fps), handles fantastically well, and has expanded multiplayer along with a sharp solo mode. Horizon is brash fun, but Forza 6 is a true treat for car lovers.

FIFA 15 comes off the list and FIFA 16 is put on: clockwork, right? Well, almost: true, EA Sports' football favourite has been on a tear in recent years, but Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 happens to be the best rival in ages.

Still, FIFA has our vote again for the best sports experience around. It plays more realistic – but still fun, thankfully – with improved defense and more lifelike movement, plus the addition of women's teams is huge.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Assassin's Creed Unity, for all its visual gloss, proved a buggy misstep for the series – but Syndicate is a real return to form for Ubisoft's open-world juggernaut.

It's set in Victorian London, which is certainly an intriguing locale, but there's so much more to love: vehicles are meaningfully added, combat is much more entertaining, and you can finally play as a female lead. Add in smarter UI design on top of all that and it's the best Creed in years.

Fallout 4

There are prettier games on the Xbox One – quite a few, actually – but what Fallout 4 lacks in graphical sheen, it makes up for with just about everything else. Building upon the beloved foundation of Fallout 3, the latest drops you into a post-apocalyptic Boston as you explore the wasteland, take on exciting and varied quests, and pour hours into building your own weapons and fortresses. The scale is incredible, and so too is the fun.
