This deceptively simple MagSafe wallet may never leave my phone
Secrid's Cardprotector+ makes much more sense to me now magnets aren't just for iPhones
As a long-time Android user, MagSafe smartphone accessories always felt a bit like forbidden fruit. Friends with iPhones had access to all sorts of snap-on power banks, card holders, PopsSockets and miniature tripods, and I was missing out.
I was hoping Google would open the floodgates once it brought Qi2 support to the Pixel 10 series; while that hasn’t happened quite yet, more Android brands are selling official cases with integrated magnets, promising a better for for your phone than the third-party alternatives littering sites like Temu and AliExpress.
Seeing how that includes the Xiaomi 17 Ultra I’ve been using as my daily driver phone recently, I jumped at the chance to magnify my life – starting with Secrid’s Cardprotector+ Fluted for MagsSafe. This ultra-minimal card wallet is easy on the eye, even my my Navy model’s subdued hue, and the ridged design gives you something to grip onto while strapped onto your smartphone.
The cashmere and Silver versions are more distinctive. The latter and the Navy are clearly meant to match the latest crop of iPhones, but it doesn’t look out of place on my Xiaomi, or the Moonstone Google Pixel 10 Pro XL I was using previously.
Secrid’s sleek aluminium card holder has a limpet-like grip on my handset, so I’ve never had to worry about it falling off, and the rubberised back panel means your phone’s rear isn’t in danger of being scuffed or scratched.
There’s room inside for six credit cards (or four if you’ve they’ve got especially embossed lettering), but the locking mechanism will keep even a single card stowed safely. Mine holds my driving license and a handful of bank cards.
When I need one, the metal quick eject leaver spits them out in a rather satisfying mechanical motion. The colossal camera bump on my Xiaomi 17 Ultra doesn’t get in the way either. It has let me finally ditch my old, battered leather wallet, which was half-redundant now I rarely carry cash around.
I also like that my cards are shielded from any nefarious NFC communication. It means I can continue making contactless payments with my phone, without having to take the wallet off first.
If you feel differently about paper money, Secrid also has the Flexwallet. This trades the magnets for an elasticated textile sleeve that can swallow a few banknotes, keys, or loose change. I took one for a brief spin and found the sleeve was a handy way to keep a Life360 Tile Slim tracker onboard, ensuring I could locate the wallet should it go walkabout.
For sheer convenience, though, the Cardprotector+ Fluted for MagSafe won me over. At roughly $75/£70 it’s not a cheap way to carry your cards around – and might not be necessary at all if you’ve gone all-in on Apple Pay or Android Pay. But if you’re still a proponent of plastic, it’s a sleek alternative to a traditional wallet
