System camera (2018)

Fuji X-T3 (£1349)

Introducing the best APS-C camera on planet Earth. It’s a bold statement, we know, but stick with us. You see, rather than reinvent the wheel, Fuji taken every feature on the already outstanding X-T2 and incrementally upgraded it. The result is an all-round beast of a camera that manages to astound in every photographic way imaginable. From the gorgeous body and the superb manual controls to the pro-level 4K video options, the high-res EVF, and the super-fast autofocus and burst shooting. There’s nothing here that hasn’t been refined to near-perfection. While we’d be slightly hesitant to call anything flawless, the Fuji X-T3 is certainly in the frame, and those trademark retro looks never disappoint. Above all else, you’ll take wonderful photos with a camera that continually begs you to be more daring.

The runners-up

Nikon Z7 (£3399)
Nikon Z7 (£3399)

Nikon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera is a real stunner: sturdily built, easy to use and capable of capturing some absolutely breathtaking and incredibly detailed pictures with that 45.7MP full-frame CMOS sensor. If only it didn’t cost £3400 just for the body.

Canon EOS R (£3269)
Canon EOS R (£3269)

Canon also made its full-frame mirrorless debut this year with the EOS R – a camera with a superb electronic viewfinder, excellent autofocus and impressive image quality. But it still left us feeling a little underwhelmed.

Sony Alpha A7 III (£1999)
Sony Alpha A7 III (£1999)

An eye-catching camera that crams in loads of tech, including 4K video, a new 24.2MP sensor and an articulating screen, despite costing £2000 for the body only the A7 III offers incredible value for money.

Panasonic G9 (£1499)
Panasonic G9 (£1499)

If you’re a keen twitcher or even just like taking pictures of other people’s dogs, the very fast frame rates and and bright, clear viewfinder on Panasonic’s G9 make it the camera for you.
