Samsung could finally update the Galaxy Z Fold series’ most overlooked feature
A Galaxy Z Fold battery capacity upgrade is five years in the making. It looks set to happen in time for Samsung's eighth-gen foldable
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold foldable series officially has three screens to power, compared to a regular Galaxy S phone, so the idea that the battery size wouldn’t alter in five years is either a testament to the efficiency of Samsung’s system or a long overlooked feature. Our review of the most-recent Galaxy Z Fold 7 suggested it was the latter.
For the last five generations the Galaxy Z Fold book-like foldable has offered the same 4,400mAh battery life – all the way back to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 which came out when Moses was still wearing short pants. It’s not a dealbreaker, given the thinness required to accommodate a split battery in the first place.
However, the time might finally be here for Samsung to push that capacity to the next level. That’s according to sources speaking to the well-regarded Galaxy Club website (via Android Police).
The sources say the split-in-two battery will this time near a 5,000mAh (rounded up, it’s tipped to offer 2,369mAh + 2,485mAh) capacity, which would ensure parity with the recent Galaxy S26 Ultra that recently hit shelves. Not a bad uptick!
And, let’s be real. It’s needed. Our GZF7 reviewer concluded: “Battery capacity is now the weak link,” claiming it might be a reason to consider other foldable options instead.
He wrote: “I still managed to get from breakfast to bedtime with moderate use – just about – and video playback on the inner screen isn’t a huge drain. But on days where I used the camera a lot, and downloaded some large files over a 5G connection, I needed a top-up by mid-afternoon to guarantee I’d make it to the end of the night. If longevity matters most to you, this is perhaps the biggest reason to consider the alternatives.”
Hardly a glowing endorsement.
Given Samsung is likely to launch a wide version of the device this summer – probably around July – the tweaked form factor is likely to make all of the headlines. However, a sneaky little battery life boost might be the key quality of life upgrade that tempts foldable fans into an new purchase.
