iPhone 20 may achieve the holy grail for Apple smartphone design

The iPhone 20's rumoured all-screen display that would bend around the edges is moving closer to reality, a new report says

Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone model – due in 2027 – will have an all-screen display with LG Display closing on perfecting the manufacturing process, according to a new report.

Korean news site Dealsite claims there have been breakthroughs in the production of the display, which will apparently wrap around all four sides of the phone to create a truly bezel-free design.

The sources claim LG Display is now looking for manufacturing supplies in order to fulfil Apple’s designs. While Samsung too had been pursuing the technology, the company is now expressing more caution, the report says, as it works on the foldable screen for Apple.

The site reports the bending display will also require bending of the circuit panel too. LG has created a thinner TFE (Thin-Film Encapsulation) component to prevent moisture build up within the OLED panel.

Should Apple be able to incorporate a bezel-free design it would give the company a landmark look worthy of the iconic smartphone’s big anniversary. Even more so if Apple was able to achieve under display technology for the cameras and sensors, minus the Dynamic Island cutout, as has also been rumoured.

However, as much as an all-screen ‘edge’ display might come in handy, I’ve always had concerns about their durability. The bezel and frame acts as a buffer, guarding against the regular knocks and drops our most-used gadgets are subjected to.

Samsung has experimented with wrap-around displays, even enabling information to be displayed around the overhanging edges of the display. However, the trend didn’t catch on and Samsung returned to simply marginalising the bezels.

Apple is thought to be planning something special to mark two decades of the most important consumer tech invention of the 21st century. It’l be the iPhone 19 series, if convention is honoured, but the smart money is on Apple going all out with iPhone 20 branding for this one.
