Amazon’s Kindle Scribe Colorsoft finally gets a US release date, Brits must wait
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft and the non-colour companion will be available in the US on December 10.
Amazon has announced its latest colour e-reader, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft will finally be available to buy from next week in the United States.
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft and the updated Kindle Scribe were announced by Amazon during a hardware event in September but have been conspicuous by their absence since. Now we know they’ll goon sale on December 10 for $630 and $500 respectively (via The Verge). Unfortunately there’s still no news on the price or release date for the European market with an early 2026 on-sale window still in the offing.
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is the first colour kindle to enable users to write and draw on the screen, opening up more possibilities for artists, as well as those using the pen functionality to annotate. Speaking of the pen, Amazon says pen strokes are 40% faster than they were on the last-generation Kindle Scribe. There are 10 pen colours, five highlighter shades and a new shading tool.
The 11-inch screen display has been designed as an alternative to LCD that’s less taxing on the eyes. Amazon says it has been engineered with a special filter and nitrate LED backlight that will keep colours feeling soft.
Amazon’s efforts to improve the Scribe range goes beyond the colour display. It’s both thinner at 5.4mm and lighter at 400g. There’s also a faster processor and more memory. Amazon is including new software with the redesigned home screen offering a Quick Notes feature. There’s also integration with Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive for integrating documents stored in the cloud.
Amazon is also using an AI based “Story So Far” feature that will recap the book without offering spoilers, while there’s also an “Ask This Book” feature that’ll answer questions about what you’re reading.
However, the headline is the colour display. The original Amazon Kindle Colorsoft had some teething problems out of the gate. Some users complained about a yellowish tinge at the bottom of the display. Let’s hope those have been cleared up for the Scribe Colorsoft.
