Apple iPhone 4 outed by bloggers

20 Apr 2010

Following yesterday’s story about the supposed find of Apple’s next-gen handset, Gizmodo has acquired the future iPhone and splashed a ton of details. A letter to the blog from Apple SVP Bruce Sewell asking for its return has put the story beyond doubt.

The Giz boys haven’t been able to get the phone running, so some of the spec’s a tad fuzzy. Still, here’s what we know:

Camera
Bigger lens (and presumably sensor) and has a flash; there’s also a front-facing camera

Screen
Resolution has been improved, though it’s not clear how much (possibly 960x640)

Noise cancelling?
A second mic has been spotted near the headphone jack – possibly to be used for noise cancelling

Physical appearance
The curves have gone in favour of a brickier form with rounded edges. Split volume buttons, power and mute are all metallic, as is the aluminium border around the outside. The back appears to be ceramic.

Bigger (but better)
Although Giz thinks the screen is a bit smaller than the 3GS, the unit is 3g heavier and has a 16 per cent bigger battery

No news yet on this thing’s guts – we’d expect a beefier processor (like the iPad’s 1GHz A4) and bolstered capacity from all those apps you’ll be able to put on iPhone 4 OS.

Take a look at the Gizmodo scoop here, and keep an eye on Stuff.tv for any updates. Will you be upgrading to iPhone 4 or sticking to your 3GS for the time being? Let loose in the comments.

If you look at the full details on Gizmodo it does sound pretty convincing. My current 3GS is awesome, but a better camera and a faster A4 processor would be welcome. Also, when you see the pics with it next to the current 3GS it is actually surprisingly thin. If this is genuine it will be a definite upgrade for me :) imho it is great to have seamless integration of hardware and software and wonderful UI in the iPhone rather than the Android path where there may be beginning to be too may different devices to make the OS consistent, and no guaranteed OS upgrades (unlike the iPhone where we have had several free significant upgrades).

I want one! The launch price will be interesting to see as well as what they plan to do with the old models.  Still don't think it looks great though.

I still have the iPhone 3G. I could have upgraded to a 3G S in December but decided to hold out for the next generation iPhone as the 3G S didn't offer enough extra features to warrant an upgrade. If this is definitely the real deal, then I will definitely be upgrading!

i've got a samsung crest solar as my main 'phone' (text and calls) and a samsung galaxy i7500 as my secondary phone (no SIM card in it though). my dad has an iphone 3gs, they're brilliant but i'm favouring android over apple's os...looking into getting a galaxy 2 once it's out. i would take it over this (4g)... htc desire is a brilliant phone at the moment...except the camera i'd say. but you know, kind of depends very much on what makes more sense to you.

I think that we can safely say this is a real iPhone. But i don't think its a final production (so to speak) this could be a test phone for software, a development unit, a debugging phone? As steve said when they announced the phone "I've been waiting two years for this!" The features in this phone we might not see for at least another year as they might still be giving them a through test. Then again I could be wrong? Until Steve gives us the real deal I'm still unsure.

Spoke to O2 a few days ago regarding this, and they said that a free upgrade may be possible when this is released, even though my contract is only half-way through. They didn't know for sure, but believed that it would be released in the summer. Going by almost all other iPhone releases, June/July is generally the "magic period" they release new versions.
