Apple to ditch support for 1st gen iPhone

We may have guessed this from its absence in any of the iPhone OS 4.0 announcement, but we’ve now heard straight from the horse’s mouth – the original iPhone will no longer be supported in any future software updates from Apple.
Steve Jobs has reportedly replied to an email from a German iPhone user asking if Apple would support the first iPhone in the future.
Adopting his usual short style, Jobs typed back just two words – “Sorry, no”.
With iPhone 3G owners missing out on the big multitasking update from 4.0, it certainly seems Apple is trying to phase out its older handsets. Could it be trying to force the hand of older iPhoners to upgrade?
Let us know below what you think to Apple’s decision to drop the older iPhone completely, and restrict the features for the 3G. Is it fair?

Since users had the option of a free upgrade from the iPhone first generation to a iPhone 3G then its fair for them to drop support for the older iPhone as its becoming obselete and won't be able to realistically support the new features in the 4th OS.

There's only so much you can do with old hardware. Its the same for most electrical devices. At some point you need to just upgrade them as your needs change. At least the older models had some upgrades to firmware. So phone manufactures couldn't offer that.

Seems fair enough to me.
Most phones don't get any kind of upgrades from the day they are bought anyway.
I really miss the lovely metal casing of the original sometimes though.

maybe not, the specs are not as far removed.

This is surely no surprise - the fact that Apple have supplied software updates to the original iPhone up to this point is surprising compared to what happens to Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android phones etc.
Surely the point is that a Windows, Android or Symbian phone is likely to be stuck with the OS it ships with (some Android phones might be lucky to get one update) whereas the original iPhone has had two major OS updates for free.

At least 1st gen users can have 3.1 os.
I am disappointed that my 2nd iPod Touch won't have multitasking but at least apps are in folders and emails can be seen from multiple accounts without checking each account manually so I will still download it even if it costs £5.
The good thing is that there's more to look forward to for when I get an iPhone in a year.
btw: iPhone 4 perhaps? since there was no mention, it is highly likely. 5mp camera, 1ghz proccessor, led flash, front facing camera?
