iPad 3 to get Microsoft Office 2012

Word for iPad gets set to knock Pages off its perch

Microsoft is working on Office for the iPad, bringing its ubiquitous productivity suite to Apple’s tablet for the first time. It may come as a surprise with Microsoft’s own tablet-friendly Windows 8 OS in the offing, but a report in The Daily reveals that MS Office could soon be snuggling up to Apple’s iWork suite (which includes Pages, Numbers and Keynote) in the App Store.

With rumours of the iPad 3 landing in March 2012, we’re expecting Word, Excel et al to arrive alongside it, making the iPad 3 a seriously functional tool. Of course, it might have some serious company if Microsoft decides to develop an Office for Android suite as well (we’re looking at you, Asus Transformer Prime) and then there are the ranks of Windows 8 tablets expected to materialise in 2012. Could this be the beginning of the end for the humble laptop?
