Black iPhone 5 aluminium body suffers from chipping woes

If you're the proud owner of a sleek iPhone 5 then you might be among the few whose handsets have suffered from chips in the anodised aluminium finish.

Black iPhone 5 aluminium body suffers from chipping woes

Stuff has received a few complaints from black iPhone 5 owners about silver chips appearing on the anodised aluminium edges of their new iPhone 5s – and our very own review unit (pictured above) has also suffered, despite our best efforts to keep it in pristine condition.

White iPhone 5s appear to be in the clear for the time being, although we put that down to the lighter colour masking any scratches that might have appeared.

It's one area where solid polycarbonate handsets like the Nokia Lumia 800 and upcoming Lumia 920 are at an advantage over the iPhone 5 – scratches show up less easily as the phone's colour runs throughout the polycarbonate, but there's still no denying the appeal of brushed metal. Check out our 10 of the best iPhone 5 accessories feature for cases that'll keep your precious iDevice out of harm's way.

UPDATE: We've been contacted by a source from a reputable network store who has stated that a number of customers have returned their white iPhone 5's as a result of flaking in the white finish on the bottom rear of the device as well.

Had mine since 9 am Friday, and so far touch wood it is scratch and chip free.Went through a few hands on Sat,and survived ok.Might get a belkin sheer grip case, just to be on the safe side.Anything anodised can be tricky I think.Does feel great in use though.Had it a month now and it is still unmarked not been overly careful with it either.Just been sensible using really. When I go out I use the Belkin Case.

Is this another case of Apple's longing for 'form over function' and 'ship it now and sort it later' attitude of recent times?
I love my MacBook Pro, but I've never been tempted by the poor phone offerings from Apple.

I still have a 4, and I use a great, slim case for it made by CaseCrown. I can't imagine having such an expensive, delicate piece of hardware in my hands without some kind of protection!

This reminds me that there is a store called The Snugg which has some iPhone 5 cases for those of you who have already upgraded. We promote them on our website, if you feel curious to check it out.
