The year of Ultra? 2026 could be pinnacle of Apple’s iPhone and MacBook lines

iPhone 17 Pro Max

Apple is preparing the company’s boldest ever iPhone and MacBook products this year and, according to new reports, they’ll both arrive under a name befitting the ambitions – Ultra.

MacWorld has weighed in on the naming convention debate, adding to the impression the foldable iPhone will not be named the iPhone Fold but the iPhone Ultra. The same goes for the touchscreen OLED MacBook that has been tipped to arrive later this year. It will be known as the MacBook Ultra according to the report.

The report from MacWorld states:

Apple is rumored to be introducing one of the biggest upgrades to the iPhone lineup ever this year, with the debut of its first foldable phone. While many members of the press have taken to calling this device the “iPhone Fold,” Macworld has received information that corroborates reports that Apple will instead opt for the “Ultra” brand for its new iPhone model. According to a source familiar with Apple’s plans, the company seems set on expanding its Ultra branding with the new flagship iPhone arriving this fall. Furthermore, our source says Apple is also likely to bring the Ultra branding to the Mac as well.

Apple has used the Ultra nomenclature sparingly in the past, always to represent the pinnacle of a product line. The Apple Watch Ultra, for example, is the current leader for wearables. The M-Series ‘Ultra’ chips power Apple’s best Macs, and CarPlay Ultra is the name for the version of the in-car infotainment system that interacts with the car’s key systems and takes over the entire dashboard.

According to recent reports, the iPhone Ultra will be unveiled this September with a crease-free display, a 4:3 aspect ratio and Touch ID integrated into the power button. The MacBook Ultra is also expected before the year is out. It is rumoured to be touch capable without the finery of an iPad screen, for example.
