Rumour – AirPlay Direct coming, doesn’t require Wi-Fi

Apple poised to introduce audio streaming direct from your iOS device to compatible speakers

According to “sources familiar with the iPhone-maker’s plans”, Apple will soon introduce a new version of AirPlay that doesn’t require access to a Wi-Fi network, instead streaming audio direct from your iOS device to a set of compatible speakers.

Called AirPlay Direct (although this may be a working title) the new system apparently offers better functionality than the Bluetooth link already available on many products.

AirPlay Direct may be announced as soon as September 12th, when Apple is set to unveil the iPhone 5. Stay tuned for more info then.
