PS6 handheld could ‘outperform’ Xbox Series S, sketchy rumour claims

Sony is rumoured to be considering a handheld accompaniment to the PS6 console. Now there's speculation over its capabilities

Speculation is ramping up that Sony is considering a new handheld games console that would launch under PS6 branding. Now rumours about the would-be specs and features for the long-awaited PlayStation Vita successor are starting to come forth.

According to a leaker who claims to move in chipmaker AMD circles, the potential return of the PSP would offer better performance than the current Xbox Series S home console and will include support for visual enhancement features like ray tracing lighting and the rasterisation rendering tool..

Furthermore the handheld could arrive packing PSSR 3, an as-yet-unannounced successor to the PSSR 2 (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) technology currently offering significant boosts to visual fidelity on supported PS5 Pro games. It’ll also be able to beat the Nintendo Switch 2‘s DLSS 2 upscaling tech, which PSS3 would be able to beat hands down according to the leaker.

Posting on the NeoGaf forums (via wccftech), the leaker KeplerL2 says “GPU is a bit ahead of XSS in raster (and ofc massively ahead in RT/PT)” and adds “Switch 2 only has DLSS 2 (CNN) and some games even use the worse “DLSS Lite”. FSR5/PSSR3 will be better IQ than even current DLSS 4.5.”

Of course, we’re taking all of this information with a massive pinch of salt. As are plenty of users on the same thread. One says: “Dude just wants to try and flex fake PS s***. Let him have his comical thread.” There’s a whole bunch of arguing about it, as you’d expect on a gaming forum.

I’m still of the opinion there won’t be a PS6 handheld machine at all. We’re yet to see a credible report suggesting it’ll become a reality. The PlayStation Portal exists as a means of cloud streaming games and Sony has taken its time in unlocking that potential. And, when considering the struggles with RAM that might delay the PS6 home console beyond 2027, it’s difficult to imagine Sony committing to another machine at this stage.
