Microsoft’s next Windows 11 update is an Xbox lover’s dream
The Xbox Mode debuting with the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is coming to all Windows 11 PCs
Microsoft is bringing a fully-fledged, full-screen Xbox mode to Windows 11, enabling gamers to bring a console-focused UI to their desktop and laptop PC, as well as other handheld devices.
The Xbox Mode, which debuted as a new user interface experience for the ROG Xbox Ally handheld Microsoft co-developed with ASUS, is a full-screen experience that sits atop of the operating system. The Xbox mode will begin rolling out to Windows 11 devices in April and promises an ease of experience using the Xbox controller to access games, menus, apps and more.
In a post on the Windows Blog, Microsoft writes: “Starting in April, Xbox mode will start rolling out to users in select markets on all Windows 11 PC form factors, including laptops, desktops and tablets, bringing the experience to a broader set of devices. Xbox mode makes it easier for players to jump into a streamlined, full‑screen, dedicated gaming experience whenever they want to lean back and play.”
The post continues: “Xbox mode delivers a controller-optimised experience to your Windows 11 device, letting players browse their library, launch games, use Game Bar and switch between apps. Designed to keep players immersed, the experience features a clean, distraction-free interface, while still giving them the flexibility to seamlessly switch back to the Windows desktop at any time.”
The experience is similar to Steam’s Big Picture mode, which offers a gaming-friendly UX on top of Windows 11 too. That’s been around ages, so it’s great to see Microsoft catch-up.
Also today, Microsoft provided more insight into its forthcoming Project Helix console, confirming it too will be able to play PC games. The lines between PC and Xbox are blurring further and it’s good news for gamers embedded in Microsoft’s ecosystem.
