The Mac Pro has been discontinued, Apple hands Mac Studio the baton
Apple is no longer selling the Mac Pro and has no plans to build another one.
Apple has confirmed the Mac Pro power desktop has been discontinued with no plans for a revival of the dated, cheese-grater like tower.
A 9to5Mac reporter noticed the Mac Pro was no longer for sale on Apple’s website, while the URL for the product itself just redirects to the general Mac homepage. The Mac Pro hasn’t been updated since it was fitted with a an M2 Ultra chip back in 2023. Prior to that it was a 2019 Intel model, so the company hasn’t exactly made it a priority.
An Apple representative confirmed to the site that it was the end of the road for the oft-ignored powerhouse. In the absence of updates, Apple has gone all-in on the smaller form factor. The Mac Studio is available with an M4 Max or M3 Ultra chip. It’s configurable with a 32-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, up to 256GB of RAM and 4TB of storage. So yeah, effectively that’s a Mac Pro in all but name.
It’s got a more affordable starting price and it takes up way less space. Job’s a good ‘un. Dropping the Mac Pro from the line up leaves Apple with an iMac, Mac Studio and Mac mini if you’re seeking a stationary Mac computer.
If you aren’t convinced the Mac Studio is ‘Pro’ enough, here’s what Stuff’s Connor Jewiss wrote in March last year: “If you’re into AI development, Apple claims it can run large language models with over 600 billion parameters entirely in memory. Basically, if you need a desktop that can outthink you, this is it.”
“Connectivity gets a big upgrade too, with Thunderbolt 5 ports offering up to 120Gb/s transfer speeds – triple what Thunderbolt 4 managed. M3 Ultra models can now drive up to eight Pro Display XDRs at full 6K resolution. There’s also Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 10Gbit Ethernet port, HDMI, and an SD card slot for good measure. It’s all still housed in the same compact, desk-friendly design that we love from the Mac Studio.”
That’s Pro enough, right?
