Huawei Pura X Max gets beats Apple and Samsung to the wide foldable phone
Huawei has revealed its first wide aspect ratio foldable phone – the Pura X Mate will be revealed in full next week.
Huawei has announced a new foldable smartphone with a wide aspect ratio, which could give us a preview of the rumoured forthcoming entries into the category from Samsung and Apple.
Set for a full and official unveiling in China next week, the Pure X Max handset has been previewed in official photographs and is already available to pre-order. It’s a book-style version of its Pura X flip-style phone.
It looks like a handful, when folded and unfolded, and although the dimensions are not official it appears to have an inner aspect ratio of around 16:11. It’s hard to tell precisely from the images, but it appears to have much wider cover screens than the Pura X.
It’s available in up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. There’s no news on the chipset deployed to do the heavy lifting, but it may have the Kirin 9030 series. The Pura X used the previous-generation Kirin 9020. The colours listed are Olive Gold, Phantom Night Black, Vibrant Orange, and Zero Degree White. Huawei is leaving the rest of the specs ’til the April 20 reveal. We’ll have the full spec sheet for you next week, plus any news about launches in the west.
Samsung is rumoured to be launch its first Galaxy Z Fold Wide edition phone, while Apple’s long-awaited entry into the foldable market with the iPhone Fold, that might be called the iPhone Ultra. Samsung’s may come at a July 22 Unpacked event, Apple’s will probably arrive during the usual September launch showcase.
The 2026 foldable trend is set to be that wider display. What it’s all in aid of remains to be seen. Can this succeed where last year’s ‘Air’ trend so spectacularly failed?
