Fable reboot delayed until 2027, so it isn’t swallowed by GTA 6 mania

The Action RPG reboot pushed to February to give it "a dedicated moment," XBOX says.

Fable reboot

XBOX has announced it is postponing the release of its reboot of Fable until next year, but it isn’t down to a development delay. Microsoft says it is moving Fable to February 2027 in order to give it its moment in the sun amidst a busy Xbox games release schedule for the rest of 2026. In other words, Microsoft doesn’t it to compete with Grand Theft Auto 6.

It’s understandable to a certain extent, but still a disappointment for those who’d been expecting the reimagining of the beloved action role playing game to arrive this autumn. Microsoft is still planning on showcasing the new version of the game at the next showcase, which takes place on Sunday week so, again, this isn’t down to development delays.

“This is year is packed with incredible games for XBOX players to enjoy, from Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 to Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Grand Theft Auto VI,” a post from the XBOX account read on X.

“In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we’re moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves. We’re excited to be giving players a major new look at Fable, as well as our broader lineup, at XBOX Games Showcase on June 7.”

This version of the open world game will be made by Playground Games, the maker of the Forza racing series. It’ll be familiar, but may end up being quite a striking new look for the series. The earlier three games were the work of the dearly-departed Lionhead Studios, so it’ll be interesting to see this new take on the classic first-party Xbox game.

In January this year, Microsoft revealed Playground “will unveil the magic and mischief that awaits players in this fresh new beginning for the franchise, including a first look at some stunning new gameplay.”

The franchise reboot will showcase “the core themes of Fable will all be there – choice, consequence, drama, action, British humour and (of course) chickens, all reimagined for existing fans and new players alike.”

As well as Xbox, the game will also be available on PS5 and PC, but Game Pass subscribers will get it from day one.
