Apple’s rumoured OLED MacBook could trigger a laptop display revolution

Apple’s long-rumoured OLED MacBook Pro is shaping up to be one of the biggest laptop upgrades in years. And according to a new report, its impact could extend well beyond the tech giant’s own lineup.

Market research firm Omdia (via MacRumors) believes that Apple’s first OLED MacBook Pro – which some reports have suggested could be branded the MacBook Ultra – will become the main driver behind a growing hybrid OLED laptop market. If that prediction proves accurate, Apple’s adoption of the technology could encourage rival manufacturers to follow suit over the coming years.

The key change lies in the display itself – rather than using a conventional OLED panel, Apple is expected to adopt a hybrid OLED architecture that combines oxide TFT backplanes with tandem OLED technology. It’s the same approach already used in the latest iPad Pro models, which serve up higher brightness, improved power efficiency, and a longer lifespan than traditional single-stack OLED displays.

According to Omdia’s forecasts, hybrid OLED panels will account for 12.6 per cent of OLED laptop shipments in 2026. By 2033, that figure is expected to reach 89.5 per cent, suggesting the technology could eventually become the dominant form of OLED laptop display.

The OLED screen isn’t expected to be the only major upgrade, either. Apple’s redesigned MacBook Pro models are also rumoured to feature touchscreen support, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The same reports point to thinner and lighter designs, next-generation M6 processors, and a redesigned display cutout that could replace today’s notch with something smaller.

As for the actual launch, things remain murky. Omdia’s report points to OLED MacBook production ramping up this year, potentially paving the way for a launch as early as the second half of 2026. Other reports, however, suggest that Apple’s first OLED MacBook Pro could arrive in late 2026 or even slip into 2027, partly due to wider supply chain constraints affecting components such as memory chips.

Either way, consider us officially excited – if an OLED MacBook really is in the works, our expectations are suitably high.
