Subscription- and screen-free Luna Band offers a voice-controlled alternative to Whoop

Health insights without having to fork out extra cash every month

Fancy joining the Whoop brigade but don’t like the idea of having to pay a monthly subscription for your own data? Then the Luna Band could be the screen-free fitness tracker for you.

Available in four colours – green, purple, orange and red – the Luna Band uses a “research-grade” optical sensor and a six-axis Inertial Movement Unit (basically a more sophisticated accelerometer) to monitor your stress levels, sleeping habits, hormonal patterns and recovery rate, which it all feeds into the Luna app.

Rather than just bombarding you with numbers and expecting you to know what to do with them, you can use Siri on your iPhone to ask the Luna Band for health advice based on your data, although you probably shouldn’t delete your doctor’s phone number from your contacts just yet. You can also use your voice to log everything you eat, any medical symptoms you experience, and even tell the Luna Band how you’re feeling at any given time.

It’s all powered by Luna’s LifeOS, which processes thousands of physiological signals per minute and sends you relevant advice throughout the day. It’ll also integrate with Apple Health, Google Fit and other health-tracking ecosystems to provide the most comprehensive physical MOT possible.

How it all works in practice will require a proper test (particularly whether the voice-controlled stuff is also available on Android), but Stuff’s very own Spencer Hart was so impressed by Luna’s smart ring that he prefers it to any smartwatch. Perhaps the Luna Band will be enough to convince him to perform a U-turn on that, but with no price or release date announced for the Luna Band we’re not currently sure when we’ll be able to bring you that full review.

About

Stuff's second Tom has been writing for the magazine and website since 2006, when smartphones were only for massive nerds and you could say “Alexa” out loud without a robot answering. Over the years he’s written about everything from MP3s to NFTs, played FIFA with Trent Alexander-Arnold, and amassed a really quite impressive collection of USB sticks.

Areas of expertise

A bit of everything but definitely not cameras.
