Lego reopens the X-Files with a 1478-piece collectors set that’s definitely not a government cover-up
Trust no one. Except the Lego designers who created this superb tribute to a classic 1990s TV show
Do-do-do-do! Do-do! If eerie whistles, grey aliens and Spooky Mulder have suddenly invaded your brain, Lego stands ready to help you process the trauma. Its latest adult fan set, Lego Ideas The X-Files, reimagines the cult TV classic in brick-built form, letting Mulder and Scully minifigs investigate the mysterious happenings in and around your bookshelf.
The centrepiece of the Lego X-Files set is a modular diorama. Mulder’s office, as ever, is less a functioning FBI workspace and more like the home of someone on the verge of a breakdown. It has pencils lodged in the ceiling, evidence of a serious sunflower seed habit and Mulder’s obligatory paranoia wall.
However, rather than proclaiming that ‘the truth is out there’, his famous poster would be better off saying ‘the truth is up there’. And, you know, having a massive arrow pointing skywards. That’s because atop the office sits a forest scene, complete with an alien – and an ominous black UFO hanging overhead.
Block ops
If you’re an X-Files purist, now angrily yelling that this layout is wildly inaccurate to the TV show and therefore some kind of evil conspiracy, have no fear. (Apart from regarding genetic mutants that pop out of the sewers, natch, one of which is included in the set.) You can beam (lift) the forest bit up and place it elsewhere. You can also detach the UFO from its stand and swoosh it about the place, terrorising unsuspecting Lego cattle.
Alas, along with the truth being ‘out there’, so is the price of this set. It comes in at a whopping $199.99/£179.99. Jeepers. If you want to believe you need one anyway, I strongly recommend signing up to the (free) Lego Insiders programme and firing up your buying finger on 1 August, so you can snare an early copy alongside gift-with-purchase set Scully’s Lab.
Everyone else can grab a copy on 4 August. Well, assuming the sets don’t all mysteriously vanish or that the X-Files isn’t once again shut down by nefarious government types in black suits. Oh no, hang on – that’s a different 1990s franchise
