I tried Lenovo’s latest crazy laptop concept boasting a useful detachable display

Is Lenovo's ThinkBook Modular Proof-of-Concept the ultimate laptop for flexibility?

If you’re the type of person who uses a tablet as a second display for your laptop on the go, Lenovo’s latest ThinkBook Modular PoC (Proof-of-Concept) will appeal to you.

I saw the new concept during an event prior to Mobile World Congress 2026 beginning. It’s a fairly standard 14in laptop in appearance, but it has a few tricks up its sleeve. For one thing, there’s a second display magnetically attached to the rear of the main screen that can be used as a tablet. The display is surprisingly lightweight, so the laptop doesn’t feel too heavy at all.

But this laptop has a lot more complexity than a tablet-enabling screen. The display pops off easily and can be connected up via a proprietary cable as a second display for the main laptop.

Both displays can be used in portrait as well and the Bluetooth keyboard also pops off so you can use it whichever way you want – perhaps you want a dual-screen with a separate laptop or simply want an extra display on the side.

The keyboard and display use the same pogo-pin style connector, so you can replace the keyboard with the second display as well.

It’s a pro laptop, so it’s intended for on-the-go workers who change the way they’re doing things through the day, using a single device for all scenarios.

What’s more is that Lenovo has also used the opportunity to introduce swappable ports, so you can slot in USB-A or HDMI depending on what you need.

Perhaps you’re working somewhere and you need HDMI, then somewhere else the next week with a USB-C instead. It’s clever stuff and there’s potential to swap out older tech once it’s no longer useful for you. This is remininscent of Google’s Project Aria modular phone project and the swappable parts in the Fairphone 6. Could we see more of our laptops introdruce similar tech?

Lenovo hasn’t given any details on when or if the ThinkBook Modular PoC will be in production, but compared to other prototypes it seemed like a finished article when I tried it, so perhaps we’ll see it hit the streets late this year or early next.
