The Apple TV app on Android adds this key missing feature

Apple TV streaming app was only launched earlier this year. However, it was missing something important

Apple TV Android

Apple has a patchy record with apps on other platforms. Its iTunes software was widely regarded as one of the worst apps on Windows before a 2018 revamp.

But a desire to make its services to Android users has yielded some decent apps. Apple Music has been available for some time, but an Apple TV streaming app was only launched earlier this year. However, it was missing a key feature – the ability to use Google Cast to watch the content on a TV.

That gap has now been filled and the Google Cast icon now appears in the top corner of the app alongside your Apple Account profile image. You can also see the icon if you’re watching fullscreen on the phone.

You may wonder why Apple bothers to produce these Android apps at all, but for services ubiquity is expected. And often even Apple fans may have to use Windows or Android for work of course…

Recently, Apple TV+ dropped the + from its name so it’s now just plain old Apple TV. The reason seems to be simple; people didn’t mention the + when talking about Apple TV. Rumours still abound about an update to Apple’s streaming box in early 2026 – probably called Apple TV Pro to avoid any confusion with the service instead.
