Poco F8 Ultra has a subwoofer tuned by Bose – yes, on a smartphone

Both the Poco F8 Ultra and F8 Pro have 'Sound by Bose' technology, but the F8 Ultra goes a step farther. But is a subwoofer really necessary for a phone?

Poco has announced the F8 Ultra and F8 Pro flagship smartphones, which are notable for a partnership with audio giant Bose.

Both the Poco F8 Ultra and the F8 Pro have dual stereo speakers tuned by Bose, but the F8 Ultra takes the additional and somewhat bizarre step of adding a subwoofer to boost the bass.

We usually see subwoofers within much larger speakers and Bose (of course) sells dedicated subwoofers as part of a home cinema set up designed to deliver the booming bass in the living room setting. In a smartphone though? A gadget that’s generally only used to play audio when there’s no other conduit speaker available? Well, I wondered when and why a subwoofer would be necessary?

Thankfully, Stuff.tv has already reviewed the device and the miniature subwoofer appears to be a tremendous success. Our reviewer wrote: “I was blown away by what a difference it made to music and movies. Phones costing twice the price sounded hollow and tinny by comparison. Drums and basslines have proper punch, giving tunes so much more depth. I’ve heard Bluetooth speakers with less bass than this phone. Cheap ones, sure – but that’s still a real achievement. With no shortage of volume either, this is a simply excellent choice for audio lovers.”

Elsewhere, the F8 Ultra has the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset with a 6.9-inch OLED display and a 50-megapixel rear camera headlining a triple lens array. The Ultra device also has a quite attractive ‘Denim’ finish available. The Pro version has a smaller 6.59-inch screen and lower-grade camera array, while also deploying the previous generation Snapdragon silicon. Both phones have an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, while both batteries exceed 6,000mAh in size.

You can buy the F8 Ultra for $729/£749, making it affordable for a flagship phone carrying this processor. The F8 Pro is $579/£549. But both devices are on sale for Black Friday.
