Samsung gets into the 4K laptop game with the Ativ Book 9 Pro

Do you need a 4K screen at 15.6in? Maybe not, but it sure sounds great

Laptops are increasingly becoming the next frontier for 4K displays, even if their pixel-packed powers seem a bit trivial at such sizes. Already this autumn, we’ve heard about the Dell XPS 12 and Toshiba Satellite Radius 12, both with 4K screens.

And now Samsung is joining in on the 4K fun. Yesterday, the company revealed the Ativ Book 9 Pro, which expands its laptop lineup with a model with a bit more firepower – and definitely a lot more pixels, as well. The 3840×2160 touchscreen comes in at 15.6in, and it ought to look pretty fantastic given the size and resolution.

Otherwise, the Windows 10 laptop has a 2.6Ghz Intel Core i7 Skylake processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M graphics card – which will hopefully allow for some serious gaming, although the need to push out 4K graphics should add some stress on the card. And the battery life of 6.5 hours isn’t excellent, but that’s the price of a 4K screen, we imagine.

Well, that’s one price – the other is US$1,599 (about £1,040), which is what you’ll pay to grab the Ativ Book 9 Pro when it goes on sale later this month. And it’s not the only new laptop in Samsung’s arsenal.

Also new is the Ativ Book 9 Spin (above), which loses the 4K screen but gains a 360-degree hinge so you can flip the QHD+ touchscreen into a tablet mode – and it has a brighter outdoor mode. That one has a 2.5Ghz Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and more than seven hours of battery life at a price of US$1,399 (about £910). It’s also due out this month.
