The iPhone 4 is here – and it's the most significant update to Apple's mobile messiah thus far.
The new design is better in the flesh than in pictures – in particular, the reinforced glass on both front and back turns the plasticky iPhone into a true object of desire. The steel rim acts as an aerial, too, and reception is noticeably improved.
The iPhone 4 is powered by the same Apple A4 chip as the iPad – and it shows. The screen is so responsive that it feels like it's one step ahead of you, and that teeth-grinding wait for the camera app is totally gone. Even iMovie runs at breathtaking pace.
If you thought the iPad's screen was nice, look away now. The iPhone has almost as many pixels into a screen a quarter of the size. Pictures are full of details while screen text has never looked this good. In fact, you can read a webpage while fully zoomed out – if your eyesight's good enough.
The joys of iOS 4
Multi-tasking has arrived! Being able to run Spotify in the background is a relief, so it's a shame O2 has ditched unlimited data in its iPhone 4 tariffs. Elsewhere multi-tasking is limited but at least it doesn't eat battery life.
Organising apps into folders is a great idea, and allows you to store over 2,000 apps, but it's annoying that all the folders look the same at first glance – the tiny app thumbnails they contain are too small to be recognisable, even with the hi-res display.
Unifying all emails into a single inbox isn't revolutionary, but it's very useful. Makes work emails harder to avoid at the weekend, though. A bigger leap forward is the message threading that does wonders to group replies and declutter your inbox.

Charge of the app brigade
The iPhone's battery-life is a victim of the Apple's success; we're so app-happy that it's hard to make a 3GS last a single day. While iPhone 4 has an improved battery life, you'll still need to charge it every night.
It's too early to say whether the Xbox Live-style online gaming service will take off – but we've a feeling it's going to be huge. iBooks, meanwhile, will appeal to iPad users who can sync books with their iPhone, too, but as a standalone ebook reader the iPhone is too small.
So the iPhone 4 improves on the 3GS in every way, and blows away the Android competition in everything except sheer geekery.

i dont understand what all the hype is about multi tasking and face time calls, i mean symbian phones have been able to do it since grand father times and apple are just catching up and also video calling has been arround for like millenia and people dont even use it and also the phone does not support flash video. i understand it has very good screen but i think the only reason iphone sells is it app store,i dont think its worth the hype.My advice get a ipod touch for all the features of iphone minus the crappy phone bit and get a HTC Desire for phone or wait and get Nokia N8. holiday home insurance

I have had the iPhone 4 for a year now and love it even more today than I did when I first got it.
I really have no idea what everyone's beef with it is, signal is perfect and always has been, the screen is stunning, the speed in brilliant. OK I still want flash (esp on iPad) but I am surprised at how easy it is to live without.
I know that Android is good, I've used one, but it's not for me. Why is it so hard for some people to accept competition. I've never heard of someone say, WHY on earth do you own an Aston Martin when Ferarri are much better in every way. It just doesn't happen. Apple do things their way, if you don't like it, don't buy it. I do, infact I love it, and will probably buy the 5 when it comes out cause I know I'll be able to use it with ease.

There are a number of phones better than this in almost every way, Galaxy S II and Sensation are a generation ahead.
It's a shame the media are so biased in favour of Apple products, how much better do Android phones have to be to be ranked better? Three generation better? Four?
Even the Galaxy S and Desire HD I would rank better but would forgive them as there’s an argument there, there’s no excuse with the Galaxy S II, Sensation and a few other dual core Android phones, (not all).
It just shows how biased the media really are, it's pathetic.

Had a HTC Desire and so glad I made the switch. The HTC's Bluetooth was intermittent it wouldn't open messages and when it did it opened ones from someone else weirdly. Everything is much easier on the iPhone

I'm sorry, I'm a big Apple fan but its slowly dawning on me that the iphone is an overhyped underspecced gadget. Multitasking is a big selling point with the iphone 4, as is face to face chatting (only to someone else with an iphone), two cameras with one of them being 5mp with flash able to record in HD. These are things that most phones have been able to do for YEARS!! Can you now send files via the bluetooth? Probably not. You have to be told to hold it in a certain way so that you don't loose signal and on top of that the battery is still rubbish! Oh and the new design gives it more than a passing resemblance to a Nokia N97! Apple are lucky they invented the Apps Store otherwise it wouldn't be half the success that it has become. Like I say I love Apple computers and Apple gear in general but I will never buy one of these as they are pulling the wool over everyones eyes.

Do you have to go on and on about the damn battery life. If you want your iPhone to last longer than a day, then stop playing so many games, stop taking so many photos and stop constantly using youtube. The fact is that 40hrs music, 10hrs video, 7hrs 3g and 4hrs gameeplay is bloody brillant compared with all other phones so stop complaining about something as silly as the battery life not being perfect. The battery is brillant for a smart phone, you just expect way too much from a smart phone. Is it going to take apple to put 10hrs gameplay for you to stop complaining (despite the fact that most phones struggle to last 2 hrs on basic games and 3hrs on 3g and are incapable of playing a decent game like the iPhone can)?

It is a truly awesome piece of tech. Beautifully engineered - wonderful design, like a classic Dieter Rams Braun design (Jonny Ive is a big fan of Rams), and the new iOS flies on it. All round fantasticness! (no signal loss for me)

ah yes and one more thing about the folder feature of iOS4 - well my Nokia N95 used to do it about 4 years ago,my N96 did it,my budget nokia 5800 express music does it,my wife's N86 does it, my cousins budget Nokia 5530 does it, my cousins n97 does it - all I am trying to say is apple never brings out any thing new except may be its display and over hypes its products. and all the above mentioned phones have better cameras then iphones.

i dont understand what all the hype is about multi tasking and face time calls, i mean symbian phones have been able to do it since grand father times and apple are just catching up and also video calling has been arround for like millenia and people dont even use it and also the phone does not support flash video. i understand it has very good screen but i think the only reason iphone sells is it app store,i dont think its worth the hype.My advice get a ipod touch for all the features of iphone minus the crappy phone bit and get a HTC Desire for phone or wait and get Nokia N8.

I received my "4" on Friday, the day after release. So far I'm quite impressed. Gaming looks a lot sharper, the camera is an improvement and the screen is fantastic. Yes, there are a few niggles but I challenge anyone to find the perfect smartphone!! Incidentally, the iPhone 4 does have a flash and the battery life is a vast improvement, contrary to the pros and cons on the Stuff review!!

I had my I-phone 4 (16GB) since I picked it up on launch day. It's fantastic... The picture definition ...I'm speachless....personally I really like the grouping of appps much tidier than before and the camera zoom. I showed the phone to my team at work and let them play with it...they all love it and there are a few green eyes I can assure you. I know have to find a protective cover for it as its bound to get scratched ...... Go get one ...I assure you.....you won't be dissappointed..

I got my iPhone on launch day, the signal seemed a bit temperamental on the first day, but has been perfect since the carrier settings were updated. This issue regarding the signal being blocked hasn't effected me. I have held it in the way which is supposed to drop the signal several times and only notice the signal drop once. This phone is fantastic, everything works perfectly. personally multitasking works for me, I don't use spotify because I have always been able to listen to the music stored on the phone while I do other things such as e-mails or using some apps. I am very pleased, it's expensive but it actually feels worth it. can't recommended it enough. Gorgeous to look at and an absolute pleasure to use.

to jbr1ght The apps have to be updated themselves to take advantage of multi-tasking etc. When Spotify releases an update (should be soon) then you will be able to listen in the background. Pandora has been updated and now enables it, so I am sure Spotify won't be far behind ...

Apple are still telling you what to do, and how to do it. If you want proper multi-tasking, proper backgrounding of ANY app, real folders with custom icons and no size limits, a sensible app manager, and customisable everything (not just wallpaper), Jailbreak your 3Gs and wait for the new bauble to drop in price.

Not sure whether I'm missing something here, but I was under the assumption that multitasking would allow me to be listening to spotify whilst sending a text or email or browsing this net. This isn't the case at all. I'm really quite disappointed
