Gadget of the Day – Powermat

23 Oct 2009

Wires are a royal pain in the backside – you've never got enough plugs, you spend ages untangling them from one another and they just look messy. Now you can ditch all the leads and wires for the Powermat – a wireless charger that will juice up your phones, MP3 players and handheld gaming consoles at the same time. All you need to do is slap on one of the Powermat's receivers to your gadget, place it on the mat and the two will work together to wirelessly charge up to three devices at once. The good news is that charging will happen at the same rate it would if you'd plugged it directly in to the wall, even when you're charging up more than on thing. And if three gadgets isn't enough for you, you can add another one via USB so you can charge up to four at once.Powermat receivers are currently available for iPhone, iPod, BlackBerry, DS Lite and DSi, although you can get the Powermat Powercube with its 8 tips for connecting to other phones and Sony PSPs.The Powermat and its travel-friendly sister product, the Powermat Portable, will go on sale on 30 October with prices starting at £69.99 for the mat and £29.99 for a receiver. It might sound pricey, but it looks pretty cool. That justifies it, right?  Essentials Powermat Price: £69.99 On sale: 30 October Contact: Powermat

Beast, but needs to incorporate itself with devices so no need for extra bits. Imply that quantum physics into every device and have every place mat charge so the world always had battery.

I'm really excited about that technology! Just imagine, in some time our houses will be wireless. if that tech will evolve, quite soon out gadgets and everyday electronics will be provided with energy with no cables! For now, I'm adding powermat to my christmas shopping list ;)

I appreciate the direction this tech is going in... but to me this seems like a sony cassette player compared to the iphone... its got so far to go before it amazes me.. theres the annoying attachments to your devices, still always at least one cable to power the mat, if not the usb cable! and looks kinda ugly..

I see the phone industry has now adopted the mini USB as the standard phone charger, sort of kills this.

i have an old phone that i love and would like to try and see if it works before i buy. will this go retail or online only. very good idea if you ask me but silly how everything needs an attachment. standard hole for the phone is a great idea also.
