Next generation MacBook Pro with Retina Display unveiled

The Apple WWDC, an event usually reserved for software, has revealed a new MacBook Pro with a Retina Display.

The new MacBook Pro is a 15.4in Retina Display toting beauty that's the thinnest MacBook Pro ever at 0.71in and lightest ever too at 4.46lbs. And that screen not only crams in 220ppi at 2880x1800px (over 5m pixels, which is 3m more than an HDTV) but it also reduces glare and improves viewing angles. Top news for anyone sitting next to you on the train then.

The screen is so clear that according to Apple you can edit a full 1080p video in a Final Cut Pro window with the tools and timeline surrounding it. Or just use it to watch a 1080p video in one quarter of the screen, while continuing with other functions, if you're that good at multitasking.

And the insides are just as pretty – the MacBook Pro comes packing quad-core Intel Core i7 processors, going up to a 2.7Ghz processor with up to 16GB RAM, and Nvidia Kelper GT 650M graphics. That'll make short work of the new Aperture running images at four times the resolution then.

All that and Apple's managed to cram in a battery that'll run for 7 hours in use or 30 days on standby. It comes packing USB 3.0, SD, HDMI, Thunderbolt, MagSafe 2, and of course a headphone jack. It's even got a 720p FaceTime camera and dual mics for clear chats. The keyboard is – naturally – backlit too.

Prices start at US$2200 (£1400) for the 2.3GHz quad-core model with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.
