Giffers rejoice: YouTube begins rolling out GIF creation tool

This is quite possibly the most important internet-related development since sparkly Myspace backgrounds

We’re pretty excited right now. And it has nothing to do with the sugar rush from the Stuff HQ snack pile.

YouTube has stealthily rolled out a new feature which lets users convert up to five seconds of video into a GIF, opening up a world of magical possibilities.

The feature is sadly only limited to certain videos for the time being (the PBS Idea Channel being one of the current supported providers), but we expect to see it roll out across all the glorious (and inglorious) content that YouTube has to offer.

Accessible from the Share menu, users no longer have to mess around saving videos and creating GIFs manually in Photoshop. The tool even lets you overlay text, letting you inject a little creativity into, for example, a clip of your cat trying to murder its reflection.

While it’s good news, there is however a dangerous dark side. We like to think of ourselves as GIF connoisseurs, but opening the floodgates to the entirety of the internet will p̷r̷o̷b̷a̷b̷l̷y̷ definitely result in an influx of groan-inducing meme attempts.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

PS We’ve included two of our favourite GIFs here, for no reason other than the fact that we could. Enjoy.
