Lego’s Luigi Mario Kart set finally gives Mario someone to race across your desk
Build your Nintendo Lego collection with the latest Mario Kart entry, Luigi and his Mach 8
Poor giant-sized Lego Mario. Since last May, he’s been sitting in his giant-sized Lego kart, glumly wondering what the point is of his existence, given that he has no one to race. Until now, that is. Because Lego has announced Mario Kart – Luigi & Mach 8 ($179.99/£159.99).
Like the Mario set, this one features a dungaree-clad supposed plumber moonlighting as a racing driver. 2,234 pieces (262 more than in the Mario set) combine to fashion Luigi, his kart and a stand that lets you place the set at a dynamic angle – at least when you’re not busy zooming it across the desk in a head-to-head Mario Bros. showdown.
This of course means that, yes, the kart itself has working wheels. And when they spin, so does the flame blasting out of the exhaust. The kart features working steering too, so you can pretend this is a proper car model or something, rather than a massive brick-built take on a colourful video game.
Big brother

Luigi is also a detailed and surprisingly large build, with posable arms, head and hands, but – alas – a non-posable moustache, and also (perhaps more importantly) non-posable legs. This ‘Mario brother’ won’t be bouncing around platforms any time soon, unless he does so on his bum.
Anyway, when complete, the set clocks in at 25cm (10in) high, 41cm (16in) long and 23cm (9in) wide. Which makes me think it’s probably just as well there’s not a full grid of these things, because you’d need an actual race track to store them all. That said, I wouldn’t say no to a Yoshi entry in this series. How about it, Lego and Nintendo?
You can preorder Mario Kart – Luigi & Mach 8 now on Lego.com, and it’ll zoom your way on 1 April. Possibly beforehand if it manages to bump into a couple of mushrooms on the way.
