Sony pulling plug on PS5 games on PC – report

Sony is pulling the plug on first-party games for PC, according to a new report. Death Stranding 2 might be the last.

THE LAST OF US REMASTERED (PS4)

Sony will stop releasing first-party PlayStation games on PC, marking a big shift in strategy, according to a new report from Bloomberg on Wednesday.

Sources told the site that Sony has decided to keep forthcoming homegrown titles as PS5 exclusives and exclude Microsoft gamers from the equation.

Sony has been sharing the wealth with PC gamers with Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us Part I, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War Ragnarök, and the Marvel’s Spider-Man coming to the platform in the last five or six years.

However, that’ll come to a halt after the arrival of Death Stranding 2 on PC later this year according to the report, with PC ports placed on the back burner. That means PC gamers will miss out on the forthcoming Ghost of Yotei, and others.

Why now? Well a couple of schools of thought are mentioned in the report. Some Sony insiders reportedly say offering games on PC is detrimental to the PlayStation brand. Others cite poor sales for the ports, which generally arrive at least a year after they’ve rocked up on the PS5.

Whatever the reason for the reported shift in strategy, it’s in deep contrast to Microsoft’s more holistic approach. Xbox first payer games are transitioning beyond platform exclusives, with the likes of Indiana Jones and the Gear Circle, Forza Horizon 5 and Hi-Fi Rush crossing the divide. Microsoft is also keeping Call of Duty games open to gamers on other platforms following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

It makes choosing the next games console a more simple choice for some. Buy a PlayStation and get the best first-party games from both platforms (or at least have access to Xbox games through Game Pass cloud streaming) or buy an Xbox and get nothing from the other side – even if you have a PC too?
