iPhone 18 Pro tipped for third major camera update in three years
The iPhone 18 Pro will be upgrade to a 24MP camera, a new leak claims.
Apple is reportedly planning to upgrade the front-facing selfie camera for this year’s iPhone 18 Pro model, according to a rumour emanating from the Far East.
While resolution is not everything when it comes to cameras – far from it in fact – a previously unknown leaker has claimed the iPhone 18 Pro will have a 24-megapixel front-facing camera. Posting to Weibo, the leaker called WhyLab wrote (translated): “The iPhone 18 Pro will likely be upgraded to a 24-megapixel front-facing camera, which is a significant improvement, compared to the 18-megapixel front-facing camera of the 17 Pro.”
As Apple Insider explains, the source of the leak appears to be AppleClub, which is another relatively unknown leaker. Due to the limited track record of both sources, we’re taking this rumour with a substantial punch of salt.
Should the leak come to fruition, it would be the third year in a row Apple has improved the resolution of the front-facing camera. The iPhone 16 Pro had a 12-megapixel selfie camera, while the current iPhone 17 Pro has an 18-megapixel camera. While the resolution promised clearer images and also more detail during FaceTime calls, the 2025 model improvements surpassed that.
Our reviewer wrote: “At the time our reviewer wrote: To go alongside this, there’s an improved 18MP f/1.9, 20mm front camera that enables better framing via Centre Stage plus the ability to use it in both portrait and landscape. Yep, you can take landscape selfies without having to re-orientate the phone. A small usability point, but a good one.”
Should Apple take the next leap in resolution in 2026 with the iPhone 18 Pro, it’s likely to be as part of a redesigned front sensor unit placing some of the Face ID components below the display. This could enable the Dynamic Island pill to become even thinner.
