Ayaneo’s Next II gaming handheld has an enormous 9-inch OLED screen

The Ayaneo Next II PC gaming handheld will offer a 9-inch OLED display. How much larger can gaming handhelds get and still be comfortable to use?

Gaming handhelds are starting to get so large, it won’t be long before they defy the term. Ayaneo has confirmed its next flagship handheld, the Next II will offer a mammoth 9.06-inch OLED display with a 2400 x 1504 (1504p) resolution. The previous model had a 7-inch IPS display.

That potential Steam Deck rival model was designed with gaming controllers as their inspiration, but it remains to be seen whether a 9-inch handheld can retain the same level of comfort for lengthy sessions. Beyond the significant size increase, the Windows-based Next II will also boast a 165Hz maximum refresh rate. It’s a variable refresh rate that can drop as low as 60Hz.

“As handheld displays continue to evolve, Ayaneo has once again delivered something remarkable. Next II features a custom 9.06-inch native landscape OLED panel — a size that already exceeds conventional boundaries,” the company says. “Its 2400 × 1504 resolution offers stunning clarity, while 5280Hz PWM dimming and 1100-nit global peak brightness produce deeper contrast, purer colour, and more lifelike visuals.”

The Next II will also include the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 chip, meaning this title won’t struggle with any PC game title. That chip promises discrete-level performance. There’s also a 115W battery, but the company is still being relatively cagey about specs like expected battery life. The company is promising “long-lasting gaming”, and the hope will be that you can get all day out of this model.

The device is offering Hall effect joysticks, 8-way D-pad dual intelligent touchpads, dual mode trigger lock and dual rear buttons. There’s also a dual-fan for high-efficiency. There’s still no word yet on the price or release date for this follow up on the Ayenyo Next.
