Is this the end of the Apple dock connector?

Potentially terrible news for Apple fanboys: all those speakers, connectors and third party peripherals you bought for your iPod, iPad and iPhone may soon be redundant. Apple is rumoured to be retiring its classic dock connector.
According to iMore, Apple may be downsizing to a mini version of the current connector to make more room for other hardware.
If this is true it would be massive news. Thousands of third-party products are designed to work with Apple's classic connector, including high-end stereos, charging stands and even cars.
But as Apple moves syncing into iCloud, is this change inevitable? We can only hope more will be revealed at the rumoured iPad 3 launch on March 7.

Not a problem as long as there is an adapter so folks can plug in legacy pieces of kit...
